Birth of a scientific project to save the Mediterranean coast
Date:4/12/2010

The PEGASO project will study specific actions to be applied under the Integral Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) for the protection of the Mediterranean

  • Financed by the EC Framework Progamme 7 and directed by Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, the project will receive 6,999,004.56 euros in funding during the next four years.

  • Researchers will be analysing 11 case studies in the Danube and Nile deltas, the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea, and the islands of the Aegean Sea.

  • The project will include the participation of 23 European organisations (universities, research centres, NGOs, small businesses and international organisations).

  • For the first time, the research will combine the study of the sea, its coasts and marine ecosystems under one integrated research framework.

From 12 to 14 April the Auditorium Santa Margherita in Venice will unite over 60 researchers in different fields from 15 countries, who will be working together in the PEGASO project, a joint effort to bridge science and decision-making processes on issues related to coast management. An important part of the project will consist in organising existing scientific data in order to create a standardised and shared data platform. A governance system will also be established to facilitate project collaborations between states, regions and economic sectors with the common objective of contributing to the implementation of the ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean Sea. The first PEGASO work meeting will take place in Venice and is coordinated by Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona.

The Mediterranean Sea and some regions of the Black Sea suffer from problems such as excessive urbanisation, massive pollution, loss of biodiversity, land use conflicts in coastal areas, and loss of access to resources by the coastal population. In January 2008 a total of 21 countries signed the ICZM (Integral Coastal Zone Management) P
