Biophysical Society announces 2013 New and Notable Symposium speakers
Date:1/8/2013

The Biophysical Society has announced the speakers for the New and Notable Symposium at the Society's 57th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The New and Notable Symposium highlights the latest and most exciting discoveries in biophysics. Speakers are nominated by the Society's membership and selected by the Program Committee two months before the meeting. Over 170 nominations were received this year. The session will take place on Sunday, February 3, at 4 pm in Grand Ballroom A of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Jody Puglisi of Stanford University, the chair of the Annual Meeting Program Committee and the New & Notable Symposium, noted, "This year's New and Notable speakers will present exciting new results on a breathtaking range of topics, including structural biology, ion channels, motor proteins, genomics and biophysical methods. I believe our speaker slate, which includes both junior and senior investigators, reflects the breadth of the Biophysical Society."

The speakers and their presentation titles are listed below.

Yann Chemla, University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, Insights into Motor Protein Mechanism through Simultaneous High-Resolution Optical Trapping and Single-Molecule Fluorescence.

Adam Cohen, Harvard University, All Optical Electrophysiology with Microbial Rhodopsins.

Lila Gierasch, University of Massachusetts, The Allosterically Active State of an Hsp70 Molecular Chaperone.

Daniel Minor, Jr., University of California, San Francisco, Structure of a Sodium Channel Pore-only Protein.

Josh Wand, University of Pennsylvania, Resolving the Dance of Protein and Solvent by Solution NMR.

Chenghang Zong, Harvard University, Whole Genome Amplification and Sequencing of Single Human Cells.

ABOUT THE 2013 ANNUAL MEETING

Each year, the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting brings together over 6,000 research scientists in the multidisciplinary fields representing biophysics. With more than 4,000 poster presentations, over 180 exhibits, and more than 20 symposia, the BPS Annual Meeting is the largest meeting of biophysicists in the world. Despite its size, the meeting retains its small-meeting flavor through its subgroup meetings, platform sessions, social activities, and committee programs.

The 57th Annual Meeting will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.1), in Center City Philadelphia. Registration is available at http://bit.ly/TZqQmO or onsite. For press registration, contact Ellen Weiss at eweiss@biophysics.org or 240-290-5606.
