Redox reaction

Redox reactions are chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from a donor molecule to an acceptor molecule. The underlying force driving these reactions is the Gibbs free energy of the reactants and products.

Redox reactions in biology
Much biological energy is stored and released by means of redox reactions. Photosynthesis involves the reduction of carbon dioxide into sugars and the oxidation of water into molecular oxygen.

Reactions in which one atom or compound is reduced and another is oxidized are called redox reactions.
Water
Life evolved in water. Living things are 70-90% water. In nature, water is a solvent for many kinds of chemical reactions.
