With the exception of the pulmonary veins, blood in veins is oxygen-poor. The pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from lungs back to the heart. Venules are smaller veins that gather blood from capillary beds into veins.

The pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood back to the heart to go to the systemic arterial system. The right and left pulmonary arteries arise from the pulmonary trunk and carry deoxygenated blood to their respective lungs.
