Peroxisome

Peroxisomes are found in all eukaryotic cells. Peroxisomes contain enzymes for certain oxidative reactions. Prokaryotes lack peroxisomes, so they are more vulnerable to toxic substances like hydrogen peroxide.

Peroxisomes are ubiquitous organelles in eukaryotes. They consist of a single membrane that separates them from the cytosol (the internal fluid of the cell). Peroxisomes were discovered by Christian de Duve in 1965.

Peroxisome Disorders
A variety of rare inherited disorders of peroxisome function occur in humans.
Most involve mutant versions of one or another of the enzymes found within peroxisomes.

Peroxisomes are vesicles that contain enzymes which oxidize (remove hydrogen) from a variety of different compounds and pass the hydrogen to oxygen. During these reactions, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is formed.

peroxisome
(per-oks-eh-some)
A microbody containing enzymes that transfer hydrogen from various substrates to oxygen, producing and then degrading hydrogen peroxide.

peroxisomes Membrane-bound vesicles in eukaryotic cells that contain oxidative enzymes.
pesticides Chemicals that are applied to agricultural crops or domesticated plants and which kill or inhibit growth of insects.

peroxisome A cellular microbody containing enzymes involved with photorespiration and photosynthesis.
peroxisome A microbody found in leaves and often associated with chloroplasts.
