parthenogenesis
development of an egg without fertilization by a male sperm

Parthenogenesis is a particular form of asexual reproduction in which females produce eggs that develop without fertilization. Parthenogenesis is seen in aphids, rotifers, and some other invertebrates, as well as in some plants.

Parthenogenesis
Reproduction by development of an unfertilized usually female gamete that occurs especially among lower plants and invertebrate animals.

parthenogenesis
(par-then-oh-jen-eh-sis) [Gk. parthenon, virgin + genesis, birth]
A type of reproduction in which females produce offspring from unfertilized eggs.

Parthenogenesis occurs in some fishes, several kinds of insects, and a few species of frogs and lizards. It does not normally occur in mammals because of their imprinted genes.

parthenogenesis Unisexual reproduction involving the production of young by females not fertilized by males; common in rotifers, cladocerans, aphids, bees, ants, and wasps. A parthenogenetic egg may be diploid or haploid.

parthenogenesis - special reproductive strategy in which unfertilized eggs undergo cell division and embryogenesis to develop into viable adult individuals ("virgin birth").

Reproduction is often by parthenogenesis since polyploid animals are often sterile. Polyploid salamanders and lizards are also quite common and parthenogenetic.

Lokki and Saura (1980) discuss the role of polyploidy in insect evolution. Vrijenhoek (1994) reviews the literature on parthenogenesis and hybridogenesis in fish. I will tackle this topic in greater depth in the next version of this document.
