Nucleosome role in the Nucleus
Nucleosomes appear to serve two major purposes within the cell nucleus. First, they provide the lowest level of compaction which is required to fit dsDNA (on the order of meters) into the cell nucleus.

Nucleosomes are involved in processes ranging from compaction of DNA to transcriptional control, and appear to be major carriers of epigenetically inherited information as well.

Nucleosome
The basic structural unit of chromatin in which DNA is wrapped around a core of histone molecules.

nucleosomes Spherical bodies formed by coils of chromatin. The nucleosomes in turn are coiled to form the ?bers that make up the chromosomes.
nucleotide sequences The genetic code encrypted in the sequence of bases along a nucleic acid.

Nucleosomes and Transcription
Transcription factors cannot bind to their promoter if the promoter is blocked by a nucleosome.

(noo-klee-oh-some) [L. nucleus, a kernel + Gk. soma, body]
The basic, beadlike unit of DNA packaging in eukaryotes, consisting of a segment of DNA wound around a protein core composed of two copies of each of four types of histone.

nucleosome A repeating subunit of chromatin in which one and three-quarter turns of the double-helical DNA are wound around eight molecules of histones.

nucleosome - unit of chromatin consisting of a short length of DNA (about 140 bp) wrapped twice around a core of eight histone proteins (two each of H2A, H2B, H3 and H4).

Histone
A basic protein from eukaryotes (or Archae) which binds to DNA, forming nucleosomes, and packaging the DNA into chromatin.
