nonsense mutationa
mutation that changes a
codon from one that specifies an
amino acid into one that does not; there are three such non
sense codons

With a
nonsense mutation, the new
nucleotide changes a
codon that specified an
amino acid to one of the
STOP codons (TAA, TAG, or TGA).

codon or an
amino acid to a termination or
stop codon and leads to premature termination of
translation.

Nonsense Mutations
Three kinds of
point mutations can occur. A
mutation that results in an
amino acid substitution is called a
missense mutation.

exons and result in incomplete
polypeptides (due to
nonsense mutations). These
mutations do not
complement each other in
trans.
Mutations in boxes 3, 10 and 7 are in
introns and
complement each other.
