Microtubules

Definition: Microtubules are hollow rods, functioning primarily to help support and shape the cell. They also function as "routes" along which organelles can move. They are typically found in all eukaryotic cells.

Microtubules
are straight, hollow cylinders
have a diameter of about 25 nm
are variable in length but can grow 1000 times as long as they are thick
are built by the assembly of dimers of alpha tubulin and beta tubulin.

Microtubules act as tracts along which organelles can move. For example, they are associated with movement of vesicles from the Golgi complex to the plasma membrane.
Microtubules are responsible for the movement of cilia and flagella.

Microtubules:
Microtubules are cylindrical tubes, 20-25 nm in diameter.
They are composed of subunits of the protein tubulin -- these subunits are termed alpha and beta.

During mitosis, chromosome separation requires spindle fibers made of microtubules; spindle inhibitors stop the synthesis of microtubules. Because most adult cells don't divide often, they are less sensitive to these drugs than are cancer cells.
