Intein
Selfish DNA elements located within coding regions that are translated with the interrupted protein, but then catalyze their own excision and the formation of a peptide bond between the flanking protein regions.

Inteins
Another, very rare, post-translational modification is the later removal of a section of the polypeptide and the splicing together (with a peptide bond) of the remaining N-terminal and C-terminal segments.

The Intein Database Web site contains a registry of all submitted experimental and theoretical inteins (inframe protein introns) as well as information on protein splicing and intein structure.
