initiation codon (AUG) Three-base sequence on the messenger RNA that codes for the amino acid methionine; the start command for protein synthesis.

Initiation codon. The mRNA sequence AUG, coding for methionine, which initiates translation of mRNA.

Initiation Codon: The codon at which translation of a polypeptide chain is initiated. This is usually the first AUG triplet in the mRNA molecule from the 5' end, where the ribosome binds to the cap and begins to scan in a 3' direction.

The translation initiation codon, which codes for methionine. The codon can also be present in the middle of a coding region.

The sequence consists of 4-9 purine residues, located 8-13 bp upstream of the initiation codon.

ATG or AUG: The codon for methionine; the translation initiation codon. Usually, protein translation can only start at a methionine codon (although this codon may be found elsewhere within the protein sequence as well).

Translation starts with a chain initiation codon (start codon). Unlike stop codons, the codon alone is not sufficient to begin the process; nearby initiation sequences are also required to induce transcription into mRNA and binding by ribosomes.

A sequence of DNA following an initiation codon that does not contain a stop codon. Detection of an open reading frame in DNA implies the presence of a gene that codes for a protein.

Translation starts with a chain initiation codon (start codon). But unlike stop codons, these are not sufficient to begin the process; nearby initiation sequences are also required to induce transcription into mRNA and binding by ribosomes.

Open reading frame (ORF)
A stretch of DNA which potentially codes for protein. A length of DNA not interrupted by stop codons. A sequence of in frame codons preceded by a translational initiation codon and terminated by a chain termination triplet.
