Homology

Homology
Similarities in DNA or protein sequences between individuals of the same species or among different species. These two types of homology are called paralogy and orthology.
See also the figure at NCBI.

Homology comparisons indicate the majority of cDNAs with homology to known genes can be categorized as structural proteins, growth factors and receptors, maternal mitochondrial transcripts, and immune system proteins.

Homology and synaptonemal complexes
Pairing is initiated at several sites along each chromosome.
Synaptonemal complex formation does not require homology of nucleotide sequence once it has been initiated.

homology -- Two structures are considered homologous when they are inherited from a common ancestor which possessed the structure. This may be difficult to determine when the structure has been modified through descent.

Homology
(i) Sequence identity between two nucleotide sequences. (ii) Genetic relatedness between two sequences of common ancestry. Commonly confused with sequence similarity.

homology
[Gk. homologia, agreement]
Similarity in characteristics resulting from a shared ancestry.

homology Similarity of parts or organs of different organisms caused by evolutionary derivation from a corresponding part or organ in a remote ancestor, and usually having a similar embryonic origin. May also refer to a matching pair of chromosomes.

homology
similarity in characteristics resulting from a shared ancestry.
homospory
The possession of only one form of spore. This gives rise to a single gametophyte generation carrying both male and female reproductive organs.

Homology: Indicates similarity between two different nucleotide or amino acid sequences, often with potential evolutionary significance.

This is called homology. While cladistic analysis assumes that most synapomorphies will arise by homology, they can arise by other ways.

One of the key ideas in bioinformatics research is the notion of homology.

They share amino acid sequence homology and core structural similarity to a specific class of major histones but also posses their own feature that is distinct from the major histones.

He joined Grant in pioneering investigations of the life cycle of marine animals on the shores of the Firth of Forth where Grant found evidence for homology, the radical theory that all animals had similar organs differing only in complexity.
