Homologous chromosomes. Chromosomes that have the same linear arrangement of genes--a pair of matching chromosomes in a diploid organism. See Chromosomes.

hnRNA: Heterogeneous nuclear RNA; refers collectively to the variety of RNAs found in the nucleus, including primary transcripts, partially processed RNAs and snRNA. The term hnRNA is often used just for the unprocessed primary transcripts, however.

(hnRNA): RNA products immediately synthesized from the DNA template in the nucleus (sometimes called DNA-like RNA or
dRNA
). This RNA species has a short half-life, is very heterogeneous and very large (molecular weight in excess of 107).

Heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). The name originally given to large RNA molecules found in the nucleus, which are now known to be unedited mRNA transcripts, or pre-mRNAs. (See RNA.) HGH. See Human growth hormone. hnRNA.

post- behind, after posttranscriptional processing The enzymatic processing of an hnRNA, producing functional mRNA, tRNA, or rRNA molecules. posttranslational modification Enzymatic processing of a polypeptide chain after translation from its mRNA.

Heterogeneous nuclear RNA (HnRNA) is on average five times the size of mRNA. HnRNA is capped and polyadenylated. Caps and tails do not turn over during formation of mRNA from hnRNA.

Below is a diagram of an heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), which is an unedited mRNA transcript, or pre-mRNAs. Exons can include both sequences that code for amino acids (red) and untranslated sequences (grey).
