Histones

Histones act as spools around which DNA winds and they play a role in gene regulation. This enables the compaction necessary to fit the large genomes of eukaryotes inside cell nuclei. Histones act in gene regulation.

Histones undergo posttranslational modifications which alter their interaction with DNA and nuclear proteins. The H3 and H4 histones have long tails protruding from the nucleosome which can be covalently modified at several places.

histones -- proteins attached to the DNA of eukaryotes which allows it to be packaged into chromosomes.
hydrophilic -- "water loving". Hydrophilic compounds dissolve easily in water, and are usually polar.

histones: nuclear proteins that coil DNA molecules.
homeostasis: the process in which the internal environment exists at a steady-state equilibrium despite changes in the external environment.

histones - basic proteins that bind and "package" eukaryotic DNA; major protein constituent of chromosomes.

Histones: Highly basic proteins which associate with the chromosomal DNA to package it into a compact, higher order structure.

have a simpler form of mitosis
They do have the eukaryotic type ("9 + 2") of flagellum (two of them in fact).

A single DNA molecule, a tightly coiled strant of DNA, condensed into a compact structure in vivo by complexing with accessory histones or histone-like proteins. Chromosomes exist in pairs in higher eukaryotes.
Full article >>>

chromatin A filamentous complex of DNA, histones, and other proteins, constituting the eukaryotic chromosome.

The proteins associated with DNA are collectively known as histones. They are relatively short polypeptides which are positively charged (basic) and thus are attracted to the negatively charged (acidic) DNA.

When DNA condenses, the molecule becomes wrapped around proteins called histones. The histones are then arranged in a coiled pattern to produce a larger fiber. This larger fiber is further compacted by looping to produce looped domains.

These enzymes add an acetyl group to histones, thus releasing the restricted access to DNA imposed by histones. Transcription factors can then bind to the DNA, allowing gene transcription to occur.

The genes for individual histones are separated from one another by dissimilar sequences (indicated by lower case letters).
There are about 200 copies of histone genes in sea urchins.

In the cell cycle, the phase in which the DNA of the chromosomes is replicated and DNA-associated proteins, such as histones, are synthesized.

A self-replicating DNA molecule that carries essential genetic information for growth and replication of a cell or virus. The DNA organized into a tightly packaged structure by associated histone-like proteins in bacteria and histones in eukaryotes.
