The part of the life cycle of plants having haploid nuclei and giving rise to the sex cells that on fusing produce a diploid stage, usually the sporophyte.

The haploid gametophyte produces haploid gametes in multicellular gametangia. Female gametangia are called archegonium and produce eggs, while male structures called antheridium produce sperm.

The 2n zygote germinates and grows to become the sporophyte. Meiosis occurs in certain of the cells in the sporophyte, producing haploid swimming spores that will settle to the ocean floor and produce the next generation haploid gametophyte stage.
