Gene cloning. The process of synthesizing multiple copies of a particular DNA sequence using a bacteria cell or another organism as a host. See DNA, Host. Gene expression. The process of producing a protein from its DNA- and mRNA-coding sequences.

The advent of molecular gene cloning came just at the right time. It came just when we needed to begin to pull these genes out of cancer cell genomes and study them, isolate them, and be able to understand their sequences and how they operated.

The terms "recombinant DNA technology," "DNA cloning," "molecular cloning,"or "gene cloning" all refer to the same process: the transfer of a DNA fragment of interest from one organism to a self-replicating genetic element such as a bacterial plasmid.
