Gametes are haploid cells; that is, they contain one complete set of chromosomes (the actual number varies from species to species).

Gametes are delicate single cells. For two plants to cross fertilize, there must be a mechanism for the two gametes to reach each other safely.

gametophyte The haploid stage of a plant exhibiting alternation of generations, generates gametes by the process of mitosis.

gametes: GR, gr X gr
If G and R are linked, then whenever you have a G, you have an R. Any gray, purple offspring (G-rr) would result from crossing over because a Gr gamete is needed.

GC-rich area Many DNA sequences carry long stretches of repeated G and C which often indicate a gene-rich region.

(gam-eet) [Gk. wife]
A haploid egg or sperm cell; gametes unite during sexual reproduction to produce a diploid zygote.

In a finite population (as all biological populations are) the gametes contributing to the next generation are a sample of the alleles in the gene pool.

This means that when somatic cells are produced from two gametes, one allele comes from the mother, one from the father. These alleles may be the same (true-breeding organisms, e.g. ww and rr in Fig. 3), or different (hybrids, e.g. wr in Fig. 3).

In eucaryotes, recombination occurs during the formation of haploid gametes from diploid cells. Recombination frequency is used to construct genetic maps.
