Frameshift
A mutation in which there is an addition or deletion of one, two or a small number (not a multiple of three) of nucleotides that causes the codon reading frame to shift to one of two others from the point of the mutation during translation.

Frameshift
A mutation which adds or deletes one or two base pairs (or any non-multiple of 3) from a coding sequence in a molecule of DNA, so that the genetic code is read out-of-phase.

Frameshifts often create new STOP codons and thus generate nonsense mutations. Perhaps that is just as well as the protein would probably be too garbled anyway to be useful to the cell.

Frameshift
A frameshift mutation is usually severe, producing a completely nonfunctional protein.

frameshift mutation
A mutation occurring when the number of nucleotides inserted or deleted is not a multiple of 3, thus resulting in improper grouping into codons.

mutations
: Mutations, usually deletions or
insertions, that
change the reading frame of the codon triplets.

Designed and implemented new methods for detecting potential sequence errors which can be used to "correct" frameshifts, add quality assurance to sequencing operations, and better detect coding regions in low pass sequences such as ESTs.

These enzymes which break down the nylon oligomers appear to have arisen by frameshift mutation from some other gene which codes for a functionally unrelated enzyme. This adaptation has been experimentally duplicated.

Most insertions in a gene can cause a shift in the reading frame (frameshift) or alter splicing of the mRNA, both of which can significantly alter the gene product. Insertions can be reverted by excision of the transposable element.
