Chromosomal crossover
(Redirected from Crossing over)
Chromosomal crossover is the process by which two chromosomes, paired up during Prophase I of meiosis, exchange some distal portion of their DNA.
Full article >>>

Crossover occurs when two chromosomes, normally two homologous instances of the same chromosome, break and then reconnect but to the different end piece.

no crossover has occurred. Both copies of the mutant allele have been sequestered in the polar body so the egg may safely be fertilized.
For simplicity, the figure shows only the pair of homologues carrying the locus of concern.

However, crossover is the key element that distinguishes genetic algorithms from other methods such as hill-climbers and simulated annealing.

Interference One crossover event inhibits the chances of another crossover event. Also known as positive interference. Negative interference increases the chance of a second crossover.

Positive interference: the interaction between crossovers such that the occurrence of one exchange between homologous chromosomes reduces the likelihood of another in its vicinity.

genetics The study of the structure and function of genes and the transmission of genes from parents to offspring.

Unequal cross-over
A recombination event that occurs between DNA molecules that are not fully aligned. For example, a crossover may occur between repeated DNA sequences resulting in the deletion or duplication the intervening DNA sequence.

: Lethal mutations in different genes on the same pair of chromosomes that remain in repulsion because of close linkage or crossover suppression.
In a closed population, only the trans-heterozygotes (l1 + / + l2) for the lethal mutations survive.

Holliday intermediate An intermediate in genetic recombination in which two double-stranded DNA molecules are joined by virtue of a reciprocal crossover involving one strand of each molecule.
