Chromatin is the structural building block of a chromosome. It is found inside the nucleus of a cell and consists of a complex of DNA and protein in eukaryotic cells. The nucleic acids are generally in the form of double-stranded DNA (a double helix).

Definition of chromatin :
The substance of chromosomes; now known to include DNA, chromosomal proteins, and chromosomal RNA. The nucleoprotein material of the eukaryotic chromosome.

Chromatin is the substance of a chromosome and consists of a complex of DNA and protein in eukaryotic cells. It can be made visible by staining (thus the name which literaly means coloured material).

Examination of Feulgen-stained nuclei revealed nuclear substructure distinguished by differing levels of staining, designated heterochromatin, euchromatin and nucleoli in order of decreasing stain intensity.

Chromatin, Chromosomes
Chromatin is a mass of uncoiled DNA and associated proteins called histones.
When cell division begins, DNA coils around the proteins forming visible structures called chromosomes.

Chromatin
The nucleus contains the chromosomes of the cell. Each chromosome consists of a single molecule of DNA complexed with an equal mass of proteins. Collectively, the DNA of the nucleus with its associated proteins is called chromatin.

chromatin
(kro-muh-tin) [Gk. chroma, color]
The complex of DNA and proteins that makes up a eukaryotic chromosome. When the cell is not dividing, chromatin exists as a mass of very long, thin fibers that are not visible with a light microscope.
