Barbiturate


A group of drugs derived from barbituric acid that is used to sedate, to control convulsions, or to induce sleep. Blood and urine tests can determine toxic levels of these compounds. Barbiturates may be habit forming.

Barbiturate abuse
Barbiturates were very popular in the first half of the 20th century. In moderate amounts, these drugs produce a state of intoxication that is remarkably similar to alcohol intoxication.

Barbiturates mimic some of the action of alcohol, particularly in their ability to depress the reticular formation (thus promoting sleep) and, in high doses, the medulla oblongata (thus stopping breathing).
