A subungual hematoma is a collection of blood in the space between the nailbed and fingernail. Subungual hematoma results from a direct injury to the fingernail.

Subungual means 'under the nail', haematoma means 'bruise'. As with all bruises in time it will disappear. Sometimes the nail will fall off because of the extensive damage but it usually grows back.

Distal subungual onychomycosis (DSO) is the most common type of fungal nail infection. It is caused by the same fungi that cause most cases of athlete's foot (dermatophytes). DSO infects the skin under the end of the nail (nail bed) and in the nail.
