PylorusThe ring of muscle that controls the passage of material from the stomach into the small intestine.

The pylorus is a circular muscle. When an infant has pyloric stenosis, the pyloric muscle is enlarged, narrowing the entrance to the small intestine. This enlargement produces a partial obstruction or blockage at the pylorus.

The duodenum extends from the pylorus at the bottom of the stomach to the jejunum, the second part of the small intestine. The duodenum is a common site for the formation of peptic ulcers.

Pyloric stenosis is a narrowing of the outlet of the stomach, called the pylorus, as it empties into the small intestines. The narrowing results from a thickening or hypertrophy of the muscle in the wall of the pylorus.
