Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections in the throat that cause inflammation. If the tonsils are primarily affected, it is called tonsillitis. If the throat is primarily affected, it is called pharyngitis.

Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharynx that frequently results in a sore throat. It may be caused by a variety of microorganisms.

Pharyngitis is most often caused by a viral infection, or by a bacterium. Viral pharyngitis is the most common cause of a sore throat. When cultures of the throat fail to reveal bacterial causes for the symptoms, a viral pharyngitis is suspected.
