Definition:
Leukoplakia is a precancerous lesion that develops on the tongue or the inside of the cheek as a response to chronic irritation. Occasionally, leukoplakia patches develop on the female external genitalia.

Leukoplakia is usually treated by removing the source of the irritation. For most people, stopping smoking or correcting dental problems clears the condition.

An abnormal patch of red and white tissue that forms on mucous membranes in the mouth and may become cancerous. Tobacco (smoking or chewing) and alcohol may increase the risk of erythroleukoplakia.
