Erythropoietin

Erythropoietin test
Definition
Erythropoietin, also called EPO, is a type of protein called a glycoprotein that is formed mainly in the kidneys to stimulate the production of red blood cells.
Full article >>>

EPO (erythropoietin) is a protein hormone produced by specialized cells in the kidneys. These cells are sensitive to the oxygen concentration in the blood, and increase the release of EPO when the oxygen concentration is low.

EPO (erythropoietin): A hormone produced by the kidney that promotes the formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow. EPO is a glycoprotein (a protein with a sugar attached to it). Human EPO has a molecular weight of 34,000.
Full article >>>

Erythropoietin is the hormone that acts in the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells. It has been genetically engineered as recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) and is available as epoetin alfa (Epogen, Procrit, Eprex).

Erythropoietin (EPO) - Stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells
Renin - Regulates blood volume and blood pressure
What is the difference between kidney failure and kidney disease?

ERYTHROPOIETIN: A glycoprotein that stimulates production of red blood cells.
ETIOLOGY: The study or theory of the factors that cause disease.
EUPHORIA: A feeling of elation or well-being.

erythropoietin
A substance that is naturally produced by the kidneys, and that stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells. When erythropoietin is made in the laboratory, it is called epoetin alfa or epoetin beta.

Serum erythropoietin test: A test in which a sample of blood is checked for the level of erythropoietin (a hormone that stimulates new red blood cells to be made).
Full article >>>

If you have persistent anemia, your doctor may prescribe erythropoietin injections. Erythropoietin is a naturally occurring hormone made in the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells.
Full article >>>

Elevated red blood cell count (when there is too much of the hormone erythropoietin)
Abnormal liver function (usually from congestion due to blockage of a vein)
Abnormal calcium level in the blood
Abnormal kidney function ...

Examples of hormones include aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone(ADH), cortisol, erythropoietin, estrogen, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), parathormone, progesterone, and testosterone.
Full article >>>

Since patients with kidney failure are often anemic, many have to take a substance known as EPO (erythropoietin), the synthetic form of a hormone that helps make red blood cells. Iron supplements are also sometimes required.
Full article >>>

Because many patients with AIDS suffer from abnormally low levels of both red and white blood cells, they may be given medications to stimulate blood cell production. Epoetin alfa (erythropoietin) may be given to anemic patients.

also be caused by irradiation, disease, or various chemical agents. In cases of renal dysfunction, the severity of the associated anemia correlates highly with the extent of the dysfunction; it is treated with genetically engineered erythropoietin.
