Erythropoietin test
Definition
Erythropoietin, also called EPO, is a type of
protein called a glyco
protein that is formed mainly in the
kidneys to stimulate the production of red
blood cells.
Full article >>>EPO (
erythropoietin) is a
protein hormone produced by specialized cells in the
kidneys. These cells are sensitive to the
oxygen concentration in the
blood, and increase the release of EPO when the
oxygen concentration is low.
Full article >>>EPO (
erythropoietin): A
hormone produced by the
kidney that promotes the formation of red
blood cells in the
bone marrow. EPO is a glyco
protein (a
protein with a
sugar attached to it). Human EPO has a molecular weight of 34,000.

blood cells. It has been
genetically engineered as recombinant human
erythropoietin (rHuEPO) and is available as epoetin alfa (Epogen, Procrit, Eprex).
