Costochondritis pain is often mistaken for heart attack pain. The pain of a heart attack is often more widespread, while costochondritis pain is focused on a small area.

Costochondritis: Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage of the chest wall, usually involving that which surrounds the breast bone (sternum). It causes local pain and tenderness of the chest around the sternum.

Costochondritis is just a quick way of describing the symptoms of painful swollen rib cartilage. It occurs most often to the cartilage of the second and third ribs either on one or on both sides of the chest.
