When alveoli become enlarged they increase the physical size the volume of the lungs. As a result, the chest and diaphragm are stretched and distended as if taking a deep breath, even when the person is exhaling.

When the alveoli don't work efficiently, your lungs have to work harder to satisfy your body's need for oxygen. This causes the feeling of being short of breath, which is one of the most common symptoms of pneumonia.

What is the function of the lungs?
The lungs take in oxygen, which cells need to live and carry out their normal functions. The lungs also get rid of carbon dioxide, a waste product of the body's cells.

Tobacco smoke damages the lungs' alveoli, the tiny air sacs through which inhaled oxygen is transferred to the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is passed back to the lungs to be exhaled.

An inflammation of the bronchioles—small, thin-walled airways leading from the bronchi (which run from the windpipe to the lungs) to the alveoli, the air sacs of the lungs—is known as bronchiolitis.

LiquiVent (perflubron) Liquid intrapulmonary ventilating agent delivered directly to the lungs to open collapsed alveoli, assist in respiratory gas exchange, and protect the lungs from the harmful effects of mechanical ventilation.

Pulmonary emphysema is a disorder affecting the alveoli (tiny air sacs) of the lungs. The transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs takes place in the walls of the alveoli.
Full article >>>

The air sacs (alveoli), which transfer oxygen from the air into the blood, become damaged. As a result, the alveoli lose their elasticity leaving them overinflated and unable to expand and contract as normal.
Full article >>>

In this disorder, the tiny air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, are destroyed. The lungs are unable to contract fully and gradually lose elasticity. Holes develop in the lung tissue, reducing the lungs' ability to exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide.

Pulmonary fibrosis leads to gradual scarring and thickening of the tissue (interstitium) between the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. As the disease progresses, this scar tissue impairs the transfer of oxygen from the alveoli into the blood.
Full article >>>

As the air sacs in your lungs (alveoli) become damaged, it gets harder for you to breathe out carbon dioxide after you breathe in air. This means more carbon dioxide stays in your lungs and you have less room for oxygen to be breathed in.

As a person inhales, the air travels through a series of airways that branch out into smaller and smaller passages. These airways end at small sacs called alveoli.

Gas diffusion tests measure the amount of oxygen and other gases that cross the lungs' air sacs (alveoli) per minute. These tests evaluate how well gases are being absorbed into your blood from your lungs. Gas diffusion tests include: ...

It passes over lung surfaces which, if laid flat, would be as large as a tennis court. In emphysema, a large portion of the alveoli (the grape-like sacs where the air exchange occurs) are destroyed, and the blood is not properly aerated.

This is exemplified in Farmer's lung and Pigeon fancier's lung, where there are circulating antibodies to the actinomycete fungi found in mouldy hay, or to pigeon antigens. Both diseases are forms of extrinsic allergic alveolitis and they only occur ...
