Biomedicine


Biomedicine, also known as theoretical medicine, is a term that comprises the knowledge and research which is more or less in common to the fields of medicine, veterinary medicine, odontology and fundamental biosciences such as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, zoology, botanics and microbiology. Biomedicine is usually not concerned with the practice of medicine as much as it is with the theory and knowledge of it.

Education

Biomedical education programmes (sometimes known as Medical Scientist Training Programmes) are given at most medical faculties around the world, usually with the aim to create professionals with future leading position in medical research and development. The education has a clear focus on human biology and basic science and how this knowledge can be transferred into a medical and clinical setting. The programmes usually encompass the medicine master's examina, which might however differ in extent and depth between different countries and/or faculties. A person who has finished the programme or is active in the field of biomedicine is usually referred to as a medical researcher or biomedician.
