Zona pellucida
[L. zona - a girdle; L. pellucidus - to shine through]. A translucent non-cellular membrane surrounding a mammalian egg through which sperm must penetrate in order for fertilization to occur.

Zona pellucida
The zona pellucida is a glycoprotein matrix surrounding the plasma membrane of a mammalian oocyte. This structure binds spermatozoa, and is required to initiate the acrosome reaction.
