Transversion
The term proposed by Freese ( 1959) for a mutation caused by the substitution of a purine for a pyrimidine, and vice versa, in DNA or RNA. (Cf. Transition.) ...

Transversion
A base substitution mutation where a pyrimidine replaces a purine, or a purine replaces a pyrimidine.
Triplet
A sequence of three nucleotides. Typically refers to the codons and the corresponding genetic code.

transversional mutant A type of mutation in which a purine-pyrimidine base pair is replaced by a pyrimidine-purine base pair.
Trapezium trapez = a table.

Transversion: A nucleotide substitution in which a purine replaces a pyrimidine, or vice versa (e.g., A is changed to T, or T is changed to G) (see Transition) ...

Instead of transitions being universally more prevalent than transversions, as is the case in most genes, A to C transversions are more frequent than transitions of C to T. There was also concern about the types of algorithms used.

Substitution mutations from one pyrimidine to another or one purine to another (horizontals in diagram) are called transitions. Mutations from a pyrimidine to a purine, or the reverse (verticals and diagonals in diagram), are called transversions.

Less common is a transversion, which exchanges a purine for a pyrimidine or a pyrimidine for a purine (C/T ↔ A/G).

A mutation that can be mapped to one specific site within a locus. A small mutation that consists of the replacement (transition or transversion); addition; or deletion ( frameshift) of one or a few bases.

Since transition mutations (purine to purine or pyrimidine to pyrimidine mutations) are more likely than transversion (purine to pyrimidine or vice-versa) mutations, ...

(If one purine [A or G] or pyrimidine [C or T] is replaced by the other, the substitution is called a transition. If a purine is replaced by a pyrimidine or vice-versa, the substitution is called a transversion.) ...

Goldstein and Pollock [Theoretical Population Biology 45:219-226 (1994)] demonstrated that carefully combining Kimura-type measures [Kimura, J. Mol. Evol., 16:111-120 (1980)] of sequence distance based on transversions and transitions gives a robust ...

DNA is only extremely rarely a direct target of natural selection rather than changes in the DNA sequence enduring over generations being a result of the latter; for example, silent transition-transversion combinations would alter the melting point ...
