Transferrin receptor

Receptors for this protein, transferrin receptors (TfR), can appear on liver cell surfaces. Regulation of TfR is important to the regulation of iron uptake and metabolism.
The TfR mRNA is unstable when sufficient iron is present in the cell.

The strong affinity of the transferrin receptor for transferrin (its ligand) ensures that the cell will get all the iron it needs even if transferrin represents only a small fraction of the protein molecules present in the ECF.
