Thylakoid

Thylakoids are a phospholipid bilayer membrane-bound compartment internal to chloroplasts. The membrane is folded repeatedly into a stack of disks called grana, similar to a stack of pancakes.

Thylakoid
A thylakoid is part of an internal membrane system of chloroplasts folded repeatedly into a stack of disks called grana.

Thylakoids
The thylakoid membranes enclose a lumen: a system of vesicles (that may all be interconnected).
At various places within the chloroplast these are stacked in arrays called grana (resembling a stack of coins).

Thylakoids are membranous disk-like structures that are stacked together in larger structures that resemble stacks of coins. Chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments are located in the membranes of the thylakoids.

thylakoids The specialized membrane structures in which photosynthesis takes place. Internal membranes in the chloroplast where the light reaction chemicals are embedded. Collections of thylakoids form the grana. PICTURE ...

thylakoid
(thy-luh-koid) [Gk. thylakos, a small bag]
A flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast, used to convert light energy to chemical energy.

thylakoids: membranes that make up the grana in chloroplasts; the actual site of photosynthesis within chloroplasts.
thymosins: hormones secreted by the thymus gland that influence the development of the T lymphocytes of the immune system.
Full article >>>

thylakoid membrane A saclike photosynthetic membrane in chloroplasts; stacks of thylakoids form the grana.
thylakoid The lamellar structure of the grana of chloroplasts.
thymine A pyrimidine base occurring in DNA but not in RNA.

chemiosmotic coupling Coupling of ATP synthesis to electron transfer via an electrochemical pH gradient across a membrane (inner mitochondrial membrane, bacterial plasma membrane, or thylakoid membrane).
Full article >>>

Cyanobacteria are close to the ancestors of chloroplasts, but cyanobacteria maintain fully functional respiratory and photosynthetic complexes in the same internal membrane system, the thylakoids.
