Stop codon

Stop Codons
In classical genetics, the stop codons were given names: UAG was amber, UGA was opal, and UAA was ochre. These names were originally the names of the specific genes in which mutation of each of these stop codons was first detected.

STOP CODON - A codon (UAA, UAG, UGA) which terminates translation.

Stop codon: That codon at which translation of an mRNA molecule into a polypeptide is terminated. In the Universal Code this may be: UGA, UAG, or UAA.
Streptavidin: A bacterial analog of egg white avidin.

premature STOP codons. Translation of these produces a truncated protein that is probably ineffective and may be harmful. The problem is solved by Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD).
no STOP codon. These produce "nonstop" transcripts.

Opal codon
The UGA stop codon.
Opal mutation
A change in a codon to create the nonsense codon UGA (the opal codon).

A long DNA sequence that is unin- terrupted by a stop codon and encodes part or all of a protein. (See Reading frame.) Operator.

So to find a gene, the program looks for a start and a stop codon?
Oh, I wish it were as easy as just finding a start and finding a stop. A start codon for a protein is "ATG." You're going to bump into a start codon ATG pretty often.

Everything between the stop codon and the polyA tail is considered to be 3' untranslated (see Figure 4). The 3' untranslated region may affect the translation efficiency of the mRNA or the stability of the mRNA.
