Start codon: That codon at which translation of an mRNA molecule begins. This is always an AUG (encoding methionine) in eukaryotes, and nearly always in prokaryotes. In prokaryotes N-formyl-methionine is used to initiate polypeptide synthesis.

A second issue in modeling microbial genes is accurate prediction of the start codon, which is complicated further by the use of minor start codons in addition to the universal AUG.

A start codon for a protein is "ATG." You're going to bump into a start codon ATG pretty often. [There are] three different reading frames in which I could start, I'm going to find [an ATG] on average about once every 21 bases or so.

In Figure 3, both ribosomal subunits (small and large) assemble at the start codon (the 5' end of the mRNA).

Translation starts with a chain initiation codon (start codon). Unlike stop codons, the codon alone is not sufficient to begin the process; nearby initiation sequences are also required to induce transcription into mRNA and binding by ribosomes.

It proceeds downstream (5' -> 3') until it encounters the start codon AUG. (The region between the cap and the AUG is known as the 5'-untranslated region [5'-UTR].)
Here it is joined by the large subunit and a special initiator tRNA.

Start (initiation) codon
The codon on mRNA where polypeptide synthesis is initiated. The most common start codon is AUG but sometimes GUG or rarely UUG can be used as a start codon.
