Splicing

Splicing occurs in all the kingdoms or domains of life, however, the extent and types of splicing can be very different between the major divisions. Eukaryotes splice many protein-coding messenger RNAs and some non-coding RNAs.

RNA splicing
a process or removing introns from nuclear RNA, thus converting it into a functional mRNA

Alternative splicing is the process that occurs in eukaryotes in which the splicing process of a pre-mRNA can lead to different ripe mRNA molecules and therefore to different proteins.

Trans-splicing occurs between separate RNAs, the products of different transcription units.
At least in this case, trans-splicing requires a trans-acting factor. That factor is an RNA molecule.

Splicing: The process that removes introns (non-protein-coding portions) from transcribed RNAs. Exons (protein-coding portions) can also be removed.

The splicing reaction is self-contained; that is, the intron - with the help of associated proteins - splices itself out of the precursor RNA.

Alternative splicing is an important regulatory mechanism in higher eukaryotes1. By recent estimates, at least 30% of human genes are spliced alternatively (Mironov, A.A. and Gelfand, M.S. Proc. 1st Int. Conf.

Alternative splicing
: Formation of diverse mRNAs through differential splicing of the same RNA precursor. This may result in proteins with different composition of amino acids or it may involve just the length of 3' UTR.

Alternative splicing
One reason is that one gene may produce more than one mRNA. RNA splicing is the normal process in which intron sequences are removed from the pre-mRNA, producing the mRNA, which corresponds to the exons.

Because of the complexity of the splicing process, one transcribed RNA may be spliced in alternate ways to produce not one but a variety of proteins (alternative splicing) from one pre-mRNA.
