Overhang

Overhang: A terminus of a duplex DNA molecule which has one or more unpaired nucleotides in one of the two strands (hence either a 3' or 5' overhang). Cleavage of DNA with many restriction endonucleases leaves such overhangs (see Sticky End).
Full article >>>

The overhangs thus produced can still hybridize ("anneal") with each other, even if they came from different parent DNA molecules, and the enzyme ligase will then covalently link the strands.

Homopolymer tailing Extension of the 3' ends of a piece of double-stranded DNA using the enzyme terminal transferase and a single deoxynucleoside triphosphate as substrate, resulting in a 3' overhang composed of a single base repeat.
Full article >>>

The fragment ends are then blunted by treatment with Mung Bean nuclease and T4 DNA polymerase, and are ligated to the blunt-end side of an adapter which has a 3' overhang (ACAC) at the other end.
Full article >>>

Because recognition sequences differ between restriction enzymes, the length and the exact sequence of a sticky-end "overhang", as well as whether it is the 5' or the 3' strand that overhangs, depends on which enzyme produced it.

The ends of the cut have an overhanging piece of single-stranded DNA.
These are called "sticky ends" because they are able to base pair with any DNA molecule containing the complementary sticky end.

cohesive ends Two DNA ends in the same DNA molecule, or in different molecules, with short overhanging single-stranded segments that are complementary to one another, facilitating ligation of the ends; also known as sticky ends.
