Operon gene regulation
Control of operon genes is a type of gene regulation that enables organisms to regulate the expression of various genes depending on environmental conditions. Operon regulation can be either negative or positive.

Operon
An operon is a group of genes including an operator, a common promoter, and one or more structural genes that are controlled as a unit to produce messenger RNA (mRNA). Operons occur primarily in prokaryotes and nematodes.

Operon containing genes that produce the male (F- pili producing) bacterial phenotype. The F+(plus) cell (male cell) can transfer the fertility factor (F plasmid) to an F-(minus) (female) cell.

The Operon
Within its tiny cell, the bacterium E. coli contains all the genetic information it needs to metabolize, grow, and reproduce. It can synthesize every organic molecule it needs from glucose and a number of inorganic ions.

Operons have not been found in eukaryotes
The lac operon
Lactose is a sugar found in milk. If lactose is present, E. coli (the common intestinal bacterium) needs to produce the necessary enzymes to digest it. Three different enzymes are needed.

(op-ur-on) [L. opus, operis, work]
A unit of genetic function common in bacteria and phages, consisting of coordinately regulated clusters of genes with related functions.

Operons are either inducible or repressible according to the control mechanism. Seventy-five different operons controlling 250 structural genes have been identified for E. coli.

OPERON - A complete unit of bacterial gene expression and regulation, including the structural gene or genes, regulator gene(s), and control elements in DNA recognized by regulator gene products(s).

Related Terms: Operon
The term which Jacob, Perrin, Sanchez and Monod (1960) introduced for a group of closely-linked genes which appear to affect different steps in a single biosynthetic pathway and which apear to function as an integrated unit.
