Oocytes

Oocytes can be unusually large cells in species for which embryonic development takes place away from the mother's body.

oocytes: the developed oogonia in a female after the age of puberty.
oogonia: primitive egg cells that accumulate in the ovaries before a female is born.
optic nerve: the nerve that carries impulses from the eye to the brain.

Secondary oocytes are released at ovulation. The second meiotic division resumes after penetration by sperm.
In humans, secondary oocytes are fertilized. Eggs are produced only after fertilization of a secondary oocyte.

stimulating monkey oocytes to begin dividing without completing meiosis II (therefore still 2n)
growing these until the blastocyst stage, from which they were able to harvest
ES cells.

Lampbrush chromosomes occur in a limited phase of meiosis during oogenesis in amphibian oocytes.
The lampbrush chromosome is a bivalent (2 pairs of sister chromatids held together by chiasmata).

Extracts from handisolated nuclear envelopes from frog oocytes were tested for the specific DNAbinding activity to (T2G4)116. A fragment of Tetrahymena telomere from a YAC plasmid was used as a labelled probe in a gelshift assay.
Full article >>>

In females, meiosis occurs in precursor cells known as oogonia that divide twice into oocytes. These stem cells stop at the diplotene stage of meiosis I and lay dormant within a protective shell of somatic cells called the follicle.

in vitro: Shh can bind to the large extracellular domains of Ptc1 when expressed in tissue culture cells or Xenopus oocytes (Marigo et al. 1996a; Stone, 1996; Fuse et al. 1999) ...

[L. ovarium - ovary] The female gonad: where primary oocytes develop into mature eggs through oogenesis. It is also responsible for the secretion of several female sex hormones (ie. estradiol and progesterone).
Full article >>>

Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) usually contain a combination of hormones that prevent release of FSH and LH, inhibiting development of the follicle so that no oocytes are released.

the primordial female germ cell that divides mitotically to ultimately produce oocytes

(
diplonema
): The stage of meiosis I in which recombination between homologous chromosomes occurs. In females,
oocytes
are frozen at this stage at birth. Only one proceeds to the completion of meiosis every month during reproductive years.
Full article >>>

nurse cells. Single cells or layers of cells surrounding or adjacent to other cells or structures for which the nurse cells provide nutrient or other molecules (for example, for insect oocytes or Trichinella spp. juveniles).
