Nucleoside

Nucleosides are produced as the second step in nucleic acid digestion, when nucleotidases break down nucleotides (such as the thymine nucleotide) into nucleosides (such as thymidine) and phosphate.

Nucleosides are glycosylamines made by attaching a nucleobase to a ribose ring. Examples of these include cytidine, uridine, adenosine, guanosine, thymidine and inosine.

For such chemical modifications to be of practical significance, it would be useful to be able to employ the corresponding 2'-modified nucleoside triphosphates in the polymerase-directed synthesis of DNA.

Included in this group are the nucleoside analogs, chemicals that are similar to one of the bases (adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine) that comprise DNA, but sufficiently different enough to block viral DNA synthesis.

Biochemical energy for translation is derived from nucleoside triphosphates at three steps. Charging of tRNA requires ATP to form an aminoacyl adenylate intermediate. Adenylate is later released as AMP.
