A system of chambers above the hard palate of mammals through which air passes from the nostrils to the pharynx and on to the lungs. During inspiration, air is filtered, warmed, moistened, and smelled.

Air enters the body through the nose, is warmed, filtered, and passed through the nasal cavity. Air passes the pharynx (which has the epiglottis that prevents food from entering the trachea).The upper part of the trachea contains the larynx.

The VNO is a patch of receptor tissue in the nasal cavity distinct from the olfactory epithelium. The receptors are G-protein-coupled transmembrane proteins similar to those that mediate olfaction, but encoded by entirely different genes.
