Membranes

Membranes are Differentially Permeable
The plasma membrane is differentially permeable because some particles can pass through, others cannot. It can control the extent to which certain substances pass through.

Cell membranes are built from lipids and proteins.
The Plasma Membrane
The plasma membrane serves as the interface between the machinery in the interior of the cell and the extracellular fluid (ECF) that bathes all cells.

Here, we review several lines of evidence implicating membranes in the conversion of PrP, and summarize recent results from our own work on the role of lipid membranes in conformational transitions of prion proteins.

The membranes of the mitochondrion divide the organelle into two distinct compartments: one within the interior of the mitochondrion, called the matrix, and a second between the inner and outer membranes, called the intermembrane space.

Cell membranes act as barriers to most, but not all, molecules. Development of a cell membrane that could allow some materials to pass while constraining the movement of other molecules was a major step in the evolution of the cell.

If we interpret those signal changes correctly we can learn something about these shape changes both of the protein and the membranes. So specifically what we are using in our lab is laser fluorescent microscopy.
