Lysosome

Lysosomes and Peroxisomes
Lysosomes
Lysosomes are roughly spherical bodies bounded by a single membrane. They are manufactured by the Golgi apparatus (pathway 2 in the figure).

Definition of Lysosome :
A membrane- enclosed bag of hydrolytic enzymes found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells.

In the late endocytic pathway, it has been proposed that endocytosed macromolecules are delivered to a proteolytic environment by 'kiss-and-run' events or direct fusion between late endosomes and lysosomes.

Lysosomes are membrane-bound vesicles containing hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes produced by the Golgi complex.

Lysosomes (membrane-bound digestive vesicles) can digest macromolecules (break them down to small compounds) that were taken in from the outside of the cell by an endocytic vesicle.

lysosome: an organelle within eukaryotic cells; a droplike sac filled with enzymes used for digestion within the cell.

mammals: milk-producing animals.

lysosomes Membrane-enclosed organelles containing digestive enzymes. The lysosomes fuse with food vacuoles and enzymes contained within the lysosome chemically breakdown and/or digest the food vacuole's contents.

lysosome -- Eukaryotic organelle which carries digestive enzymes. The lyzosome fuses with a vacuolar membrane containing ingested particles, which are then acted upon by the enzymes.

lysosome

A membrane-enclosed bag of hydrolytic enzymes found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells.

Once internalized, both Ptc and Shh appear to be targeted to the lysosome, at least in some cell types (Mastronardi et al. 2000).

As well as protein modification, Golgi apparatus is involved in the transport of lipids around the cell as well creating lysosomes -- organelles involved in digestion.
