As more and more markers are studied, linkage groups become larger (and the number of groups smaller) until the number of linkage groups equals the number of chromosomes.
The experiment cited above was confirmation of an early experiment of T. H.

However, in molecular biology, recombination generally refers to the molecular process by which alleles at two genes in a linkage group can become separated.

Linkage groups are invariably the same number as the pairs of homologous chromosomes an organism possesses.

While linkage groups as a whole are well conserved in chicken, interruptions and rearrangements in synteny at the level of gene-to-gene resolution are pervasive.
