Keratins are a family of fibrous structural proteins; tough and insoluble, they form the hard but nonmineralized structures found in reptiles, birds, amphibians and mammals. The baleen plates of filter-feeding whales are made of them.

Keratin is a tough, insoluble protein found in the outer layer of the skin of human beings and many other animals. This outer layer of skin is called the epidermis. The outermost layer of cells of the epidermis contains keratin.

keratin A ?brous protein that ?lls mature keratinocytes near the skin's surface.
keratinocytes The basic cell type of the epidermis; produced by basal cells in the inner layer of the epidermis.

keratin A tough, water-resistant protein found in the epidermal layers of the skin. Found in hair, feathers, hoofs, nails, claws, bills, etc.
keystone predator A predator that is very important in the maintenance of the structure of a community.

keratin
[Gk. karas, horn]
One of a group of tough, fibrous proteins formed by certain epidermal tissues and especially abundant in skin, claws, hair, feathers, and hooves.

keratins are found in epithelial cells and also form hair and nails;
nuclear lamins form a meshwork that stabilizes the inner membrane of the nuclear envelope;
neurofilaments strengthen the long axons of neurons; ...

keratins Insoluble protective or structural proteins consisting of parallel polypeptide chains in a-helical or conformations. ketogenic amino acids Amino acids with carbon skeletons that are metabolized to ketone bodies.

Similar results were observed when a mouse cell line was transformed with headand tailless human keratin constructs (Bader et al., 1991, J Cell Biol 115:1293).

The baleen whales are characterized by the baleen, a sieve-like structure in the upper jaw made of keratin, which they use to filter plankton from the water. They are the largest whales.
The toothed whales have teeth and prey on fish and/or squid.
