Ion channel

Ion channels are pore-forming proteins that help establish the small voltage gradient that exists across the membrane of all living cells (see cell potential) by allowing the flow of ions down their electrochemical gradient.

Ion channels are present in the membranes that surround all biological cells. By conducting and controlling the flow of ions, these pore-forming proteins help establish the small negative voltage that all cells possess at rest (see cell potential).

Ion channel in a membrane that opens and closes in response to changes in membrane potential (voltage); the sodium and potassium channels of neurones are examples.

Many ion channels open or close in response to binding a small signaling molecule or "ligand". Some ion channels are gated by extracellular ligands; some by intracellular ligands.

Channel proteins that span the cell membrane form the ion channels. To determine the structure of proteins, scientists have often used X-ray crystallography.

Use of a CyP-D fusion protein as affinity matrix has revealed that CyP-D binds very strongly to 1:1 complexes of the voltage-dependent anion channel (from the outer membrane) and adenine nucleotide translocase (inner membrane).

A substance that binds specifically, and non-covalently; as in a ligand-gated ion channel.

Released neurotransmitters diffuse across the cleft, and bind to receptors on the other cell's membrane, causing ion channels on that cell to open. Some neurotransmitters cause an action potential, others are inhibitory.

nodes of Ranvier
the small gaps in the myelin sheath between successive ganglia cells along the axon of a neuron; also, the site of high concentration of voltage-sensitive ion channels.
