Independent assortment refers to the random arrangement of pairs of chromosomes. The diagram below shows four possible arrangements of chromosomes during metaphase 1 from an individual that has 6 total chromosomes.

Independent Assortment
This principle of heredity formulated by Gregor Mendel states that traits are transmitted to offspring independently of one another.

independent assortment
the random arrangement and separation of chromosomes during meiosis, giving all possible combinations in equal frequency. This process explains the random distribution in the gametes of genes or homologous chromosomes.

law of independent assortment
Mendel's second law, stating that each allele pair segregates independently during gamete formation; applies when genes for two traits are located on different pairs of homologous chromosomes.

principle of independent assortment Mendel's second law; holds that during gamete formation, alleles in one gene pair segregate into gametes independently of the alleles of other gene pairs.

The most important principle of Mendel's law of independent assortment is that the emergence of one trait will not affect the emergence of another.

During meiosis I, genetic information is distributed through independent assortment. Homologous chromosomes will eventually part ways into separate cells. However, homologous chromosomes are oriented independently of their companions.

shows independent assortment, union of these gametes should produce approximately equal numbers of the four phenotypes. But as the chart shows, there is instead a strong tendency for the parental alleles to stay together.

These genetic characters assort independently of one another.
The independent assortment of genetic characters is Mendel's 2nd Law.
Today, characters that assort independently are called unlinked characters.

The question can be asked, is the sex ratio then just a non-adaptive consequence of the independent assortment of X and Y chromosomes in male sperm? Or, is the ratio adaptive and Mendelian assortment an adaptive trait that has evolved?

Linkage -- the greater association in inheritance of two or more nonallelic genes than is to be expected from independent assortment; genes are linked because they reside on the same chromosome.
