fertilization
union of sperm and egg in sexual reproduction

Fertilization membrane
A membrane formed in some aquatic species from the vitelline membrane and cortical granules immediately after sperm penetration into the ovum. It is thought to prevent polyspermy by making the egg impenetrable to other sperm.

Fertilization in plants
After the pistil is pollinated, the pollen grain germinates in a response to a sugary fluid secreted by the mature stigma. From each pollen grain, a pollen tube grows out attempting to travel into the ovary by creating a path.

Fertilization
Entrance of the sperm initiates a sequence of events:
Meiosis II is completed.
The cytoplasm of the egg rotates about 30 degrees relative to the poles.
Full article >>>

fertilization The fusion of two gametes (sperm and ovum) to produce a zygote that develops into a new individual with a genetic heritage derived from both parents.
Full article >>>

Fertilization of an organism from an other organism with a different genetic constitution. Cf. Selfing.
Trait
An attribute or character of an individual within a species for which heritable differences can be defined.
Full article >>>

fertilization -- The process by which an egg is made capable of generating offspring. It is often synonymous with syngamy.
gamete -- Reproductive cells which fuse to form a zygote. Gametes are haploid, and may be differentiated into egg and sperm.

fertilization
The union of haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote.

Full article >>>

fertilization membrane A membrane that raises off the surface of an egg after sperm penetration; prevents multiple fertilization.
Full article >>>

fertilization cone - a prominence extending from the surface of some eggs at the moment of, or in some cases allegedly shortly before contact with a sperm.

Fertilization
: Fusion of female and male haploid gametes to form a diploid zygote from which a new individual develops.

in vitro fertilization: The mixing of eggs with sperm in a laboratory dish in order to achieve conception.

Cross-pollination. Fertilization of a plant from a plant with a different genetic makeup.
Crossing-over. The exchange of DNA sequences between chromatids of homologous chromosomes during meiosis.

Parthenogenesis -- the development of an individual from an egg without fertilization.

Usually, self-fertilization does not occur. Also called synchronous hermaphrodites. Examples: Earthworms.

In the late 1870's and early 1880's, cytologists examined fertilization. They noticed that the inequality of the size of the nuclei of egg and sperm disappears.

Even before fertilization, development is occurring. We normally think of an egg as a storehouse of energy supply and nutrients that the embryo will use as it develops.

The nucleus of a sperm or an egg prior to fertilization. Sperm and egg cells carry half the number of chromosomes of other nonreproductive cells.

trophoblast: a layer of cells that forms after fertilization; projections from the trophoblast form vessels, which merge with maternal blood vessels to form the placenta.
tropism: the bending or turning response of a plant caused by external stimuli.
