Evolutionary tree
The evolutionary tree of living things is currently supposed to run something along the lines of that listed below.

evolutionary tree -- A diagram which depicts the hypothetical phylogeny of the taxa under consideration. The points at which lineages split represent ancestor taxa to the descendant taxa appearing at the terminal points of the cladogram.

Just as with other evolutionary trees, one can also estimate from genome sequences the time of divergence of two branches. This evidence indicates that the Group M clade of HIV-1 invaded humans sometime early in the 20th century perhaps around 1930.

Though there were undoubtedly mass extinctions in the Archean and Proterozoic, it is only during the Phanerozoic Eon that the emergence of bones and shells in the evolutionary tree has provided a sufficient fossil record from which to make a ...

Thus determining the phylogenetic history of a species can not be done conclusively by determining evolutionary trees for single genes.
Genes can move across species barriers by conjugation.

This scientific classification should reflect the evolutionary trees (phylogenetic trees) of the different organisms. Such classifications are the province of the disciplines of systematics and taxonomy.

In this case study you will learn about the mating calls of Physalaemus frogs, and how the calls have evolved over time. You also will see how scientists use molecular information to develop an evolutionary tree based on sequence homology.
