Episomes are plasmids that can integrate themselves into the chromosomal DNA of the host organism (Fig. 3).

Episome
The term introduced by Jacob and Wollman (1958b) for a particle which may at some time exist attached to and apparently integrated with the hereditary material of a cell, and which may at other times occur free from such attachment.

Episome
A genetic element that can exist either as an autonomous replicating plasmid or can insert into the bacterial chromosome. This is an old term that is rarely used anymore.

Episome: Extrachromosomal genetic element. Generally used synonymously for plasmid.

An episome is a plasmid incorporated in the bacterial chromosome. Plasmids are self-replicating in a manner like the bacterial chromosome. Many plasmids have been recognized for E.

The F-plasmid is an episome (a plasmid that can integrate itself into the bacterial chromosome by genetic recombination) of about 100 kb length. (One kb is one thousand base pairs) It carries its own origin of replication, called oriV.

(Fertility Factor): Transmissible plasmid (
episome
) in bacteria (such as E. coli) that acts as a sex factor. It is a circular DNA about 94 kb long. Conjugation and chromosomal gene transfer occur from F+ (male) to F- (female) bacterium.
